The Research Center on Spirituality and Health (NUPES/UFJF) is pleased to announce that in September and October professors Ronald L. Numbers and Andrew Pinsent will be giving conferences and  workshops on the relationship between science and religion, an area in which they are two of the world’s leading authorities.



with Prof. Ronald Numbers, PhD, on Thursday, 27th September 2012 at 19h30, at the Anfiteatro do NOVO ICH da UFJF.

This conference will be based on his book of the same title,published by Harvard University Press (2009).


with Dr. Andrew Pinsent, PhD, on Monday, 8th October 2012 at 19h30 at the Anfiteatro das Pró-Reitorias da UFJF.


Research Workshops:

With Ronald L. Numbers, PhD,

on Friday, 28th September 2012 at the Anfiteatro do NOVO ICH (UFJF). In the morning, from 9h to 12h, he will discuss issues relating to Science, Pseudoscience and Science falsely so called,” and in the afternoon, from 14h to 17h, the issue to be addressed is “Methodologies and Strategies Research of Relationship between Science and Religion”.

on Tuesday 9th October 2012 at the Anfiteatro do NOVO ICH (UFJF), he will discuss the theme “Developing Research and Career in Research of Aspects Related to Science and Religion”.


About our guests

RONALD L. NUMBERS is Hilldale Professor of the History of Science and Medicine and of Religious Studies and a member of the department of medical history and bioethics at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he has taught for nearly four decades.  He has written or edited more than two dozen books, including, most recently, Galileo Goes to Jail and Other Myths                  about Science and Religion (2009), Biology and Ideology from Descartes to Dawkins (2010, with Denis Alexander), Science and Religion around the World (2011, with John Hedley Brooke), and Wrestling with Nature:  From Omens to Science (2011, with Peter Harrison and Michael H. Shank. He is general editor, with David C. Lindberg, of the eight-volume Cambridge History of Science (2003- .), as well as a past president the History of Science Society, the American Society of Church History, and the International Union of History and Philosophy of Science.


ANDREW PINSENT is Research Director of the Ian Ramsey Centre for Science and Religion at the University of Oxford. Dr Pinsent has a first class degree in physics and a D.Phil in high energy physics from Merton College, Oxford, three degrees in philosophy and theology from the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome and a further Ph.D. in philosophy from Saint Louis University.  Member of the Faculty of Theology (Oxford) and a Catholic priest in England. He is Director of the project “Science and Religion in Latin America” (Oxford). His previous scientific research, such as particle physicist, contributed to the DELPHI experiment at CERN as well as being co-author of 31 publications of this collaboration. A focus of his present research is the application of insights from autism and social cognition to ‘second-person’ accounts of moral perception and character formation.


The workshops will be exclusive to members of NUPES and other academic scholars, with participation restricted to invited guests.
