Social Services

The Course:

The activities are divided into lectures, workshops, laboratories and seminars. It is structured into three segments of knowledge. The first one are the theoretical-methodological and ethical-political foundations, with subjects belonging to the fields of Sociology, Philosophy, Economics, Psychology and Politics, which enable the understanding of society in its contradictory movements. The second one are the fundamentals of the social-historical formation of Brazilian society, which contains the subjects of History, Social Politics, Law and Social Planning. It aims to understand the dynamics of this society, i.e. its formation and its urban and rural development as well as its regional and local differences. And, finally, there are the professional work fundamentals, comprising all of the elements of Social Work, such as the historical, theoretical, methodological and technical trajectory, the ethical components involving the professional practice, research, planning, administration in Social Work and the supervised internship. This is accomplished in different public and private institutions with which UFJF has agreements.

Professional prospects:

Social workers act to overcome the ideology of welfare and advance the fights for rights and citizenship. They are called up to implement social assistance policies within governmental and non-governmental organizations as well as in private organizations. They operate in two perspectives: service rendering and educational activities. This professional is also required to perform programs, take on advisory, planning and managing positions of these policies in both the regional and local levels. In the public sphere, the social worker can act in courthouses and councils linked to social policies, notably, welfare and children and teenager healthcare. Other fields of activity include state (regional) and municipal departments, mainly in the areas of health, legal, welfare, education, children’s and teenagers’ rights, family and the elderly; community centers; institutes of social security; hospitals and clinics; companies; and unions.
